Still waving, not drowning
I have been busy, if a little indulgent. The WYA Blog has been revisited, tidied up, and reframed. Over the past few weeks, I’ve examined the entire Wave Your Arms archive - every post, idea, and half-formed thought, dating back to 2008. This includes over 200 articles written in various roles, cities, and stages of my journey. Some reflect immediate responses; others were more deliberate, and some a little bit too ranty looking back. All aim to make sense of people, leadership, organisations, and the evolving world of work. I finally did what I've meant to do for years: review, edit, and refine everything. What did I discover?
1. Creativity really matters to me, and it’s the core theme of the whole shebang. Whether in music, learning, theatre, cultural life, or different settings, creativity sustains and inspires my writing. More than half the things Ive written about are borne from that theme.
2. Some ideas have endured over time.
Recurrent themes—leadership, cohesion, culture, and performance —were present from the start. While language has evolved, the core questions remain largely the same: how to we get people to better connect and cohere?
3. Some ideas need(ed) updating.
As the world shifted - hybrid work, AI, endemic disruption - these topics weren't on the radar in 2008. Certain posts needed reframing to reflect new contexts, not because they were wrong, but on refledction, I’ve left that naivety there. Nostradramus I am not!
What's next?
This isn't a final point but a useful reset: a clearer, sharper foundation for what follows — especially as leadership itself is being redefined by technology, AI, and the growing need for cohesion in increasingly fragmented organisations. So, consider this: 200+ articles. 18 years of writing stuff down and sharing it. Now refined (with fewer typos!), clarified, and ready for what's ahead.
More to come.
If you've read Wave Your Arms over the years — thank you. If not, now might be a good moment to take a look. Much love, John.
